Darren A. Schuhmacher, MD
Dr. Darren Schuhmacher finds his work the most satisfying when he is able to help patients get their pain under control and improve their quality of life.
For more than a decade, he has brought his extensive expertise to Dallas Pain Consultants where he is physician partner/owner.
Growing up, he would listen to stories from his grandfather and father who were both anesthesiologists. “Once I was able to do a rotation in medical school, I knew it was what I wanted to do for my career,” he said.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University, the University of Texas at San Antonio was the location for his master’s and medical degrees. He finished an internship and an anesthesiology residency at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, TX where he would later serve as an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology for three years. He also completed a pain management fellowship at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA.
When developing an individualized treatment plan, Dr. Schuhmacher uses medications when patients have tried and failed more conservative treatments like rest, physical therapy and chiropractic care. “Once we have a diagnosis, I use medications that are most likely to provide relief for the particular patient’s diagnosis,” he said. “I start with the lowest dose possible and slowly titrate the medication to reduce the risk of side effects but still provide relief.”
Throughout his time with patients, he aims to educate each of them about treatment options and what is most likely to give them pain relief with the least invasive therapy. “I treat patients the way I would want my family member treated,” he said.
Away from the office, Dr. Schuhmacher can be found in the outdoors fishing and hiking.
